Château-Meyney St. Estephe 2000
Wine EnthusiastTypical of Saint-Estèphe, this wine is totally closed up. It is more tannins than fruit at this stage of its development. But it is obvious that there is fruit there, and that it will develop. But for now, it's a case of watch this space.
Wine SpectatorLove the spicy, nutmeg and floral nose to this. Medium-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a medium finish. Tight now, but should come around. Should be a bit better. Best after 2007.
Wine AdvocateWhat has happened to this estate? One of the great overachievers of the seventies and eighties (the 1975, 1982, and 1986 are superb), Meyney seems to have hit hard times. The 2000 reveals a lack of concentration, and astringent, hard tannins, in addition to tobacco-infused sweet berry, earthy fruit in the aromas and flavors. A pinched, compressed finish is likely to dry out. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2014.
