Georges De Blanquet Sentier Rose 2016A light-hued rosé de saignée. Mostly Cinsault with a touch of Grenache, Syrah, and Cunoise, from organically farmed vines. uses native yeasts, adoesn’t add lactic acid Peppery tropical fruit with a refreshing acidity make it a perfect patio wine. Located just northwest of Aix-en-Provence, vigneron Philippe Pouchin has been farming organically since his arrival at the domaine in the early 1990s. Since 2010, the domaine has been certified Agriculture Biologique. Over the past several decades, Philippe has worked to create a balance in the vineyard through biodiversity. As he describes it, “the vines grow in the middle of the grass, like a tree in a prairie. This way of farming creates a lot of biodiversity, and at the domaine has replaced the traditional plowing. This effect of biodiversity makes the vineyard more resistant to imbalances in the weather or other ill effects. The vines at Badasset have been pioneering in this regard. We find here a certain wisdom centered around the idea that it’s more efficient to bend to the will of nature and accompany it, rather than to fight against it.” The wines produced are an honest reflection of this desire to respect the land, and they also represent a terrific value. A side note: Badasse (with an E at the end, smart guy!) is the name of a local flower found in the mediterranean. Called canary clover in English, it was used to feed silk worms in the middle ages, and today is prevalent part of the biodiversity around the domaine.
Villa Wolf Pinot Noir Rosé 2017The Pfalz (aka ‘Palatinate’) region is in the Rhine river valley in southwest Germany, directly north of France’s Alsace region. The low-lying Haardt mountains protect the area from cold, wet Atlantic weather, making it one of the warmer and drier areas of Germany. Wine grapes do quite well here where it is possible to achieve full ripeness in every vintage. The predominant soil type in this area is well-drained, weathered sandstone. It produces wines with a fruit-driven purity and a stony structure. The Villa Wolf Pinot Noir Rosé is made with fruit from vineyards farmed expressly for the purpose of producing a rosé. Only perfectly ripe , healthy grapes are selected. Upon harvest the fruit is given a brief maceration (four to six hours) to extract a lovely salmon color from the Pinot Noir grapes. The resulting wine is light and refreshing, with deliciously bright fruit flavors and a clean, zippy finish.
