Domaine Felines Jourdan Picpoul de Pinet 2018 750mlThe Bassin-de-Thau , located just to the south-east of Montpellier, is a large inland expanse of water , with a very narrow thread of land hosting the town of Sete in the lee of the Mediterranean. Just to the north we find Domaine Felines Jourdan, widely regarded as the best producer in the region of the highly fashionable Picpoul-de-Pinet varietal. The etymology of the grape variety gives a clue to the style; ‘pique’ implying the crispness and firmness, ‘poule’, rather more tangentially, hinting at soft and maternal qualities. The wine has fine coloring with hints of green. It boasts a spicy and floral nose, distinctive with echoes of gun flint, aniseed and fennel, not to mention oyster shell, pebbles and almost a hint of honey. The wine is an unbeatable match for seafood platter, grilled fish and, when in season, asparagus. Most picpoul is made by one or two large co-operatives who make clean, but not always exciting wine. However, a few growers still make and bottle their own wine and this is one of the best. A Languedoc equivalent to Italy’s Soave

The famed vineyards include: Beaune Gréves Vigne de L’Enfant Jésus, Chevalier-Montrachet, Montrachet, Corton, Corton-Charlemagne, Bonnes-Mares and Clos Vougeot to name a few. From the vine to bottle, the process is handled with meticulous care, to ensure the most faithful expression of each terroir. Installed since the beginning of the 19th century on the site of the ancient Château de Beaune, Maison Bouchard Père & Fils uses the underground galleries and bastions of this fortress built by Luis XI, 10 meters below ground, for the slow maturing of its wines under optimal conditions. Millions of bottles, including a rare collection of prephylloxera wines rest in the cellars today protected by 7 meter thick walls.
