Cantina Riff Pinot Grigio 2018
Although fruit for the Riff 2018 Pinot Grigio technically comes from the Veneto, I am inserting this wine into my Alto Adige report because it is made by the Lageder family. Packaged in a screwcap bottle, this is a light wine with a bright and crystalline appearance. There is a note of flint at the start, but it lifts quickly to reveal white flower, pear and citrus. The finish is crisp and lean, and you get fabulous value here. Some 220 million years ago, an ocean and an ancient coral reef existed where the Italian Alps are today. The ocean retreated, leaving behind abundant marine fossils that characterize the soils of these vineyards in the Veneto.
