Domaine Felines Jourdan Picpoul de Pinet 2019The Bassin-de-Thau , located just to the south-east of Montpellier, is a large inland expanse of water , with a very narrow thread of land hosting the town of Sete in the lee of the Mediterranean. Just to the north we find Domaine Felines Jourdan, widely regarded as the best producer in the region of the highly fashionable Picpoul-de-Pinet varietal. The etymology of the grape variety gives a clue to the style; ‘pique’ implying the crispness and firmness, ‘poule’, rather more tangentially, hinting at soft and maternal qualities. The wine has fine coloring with hints of green. It boasts a spicy and floral nose, distinctive with echoes of gun flint, aniseed and fennel, not to mention oyster shell, pebbles and almost a hint of honey. The wine is an unbeatable match for seafood platter, grilled fish and, when in season, asparagus. Most picpoul is made by one or two large co-operatives who make clean, but not always exciting wine. However, a few growers still make and bottle their own wine and this is one of the best. A Languedoc equivalent to Italy’s Soave

Domaine de Vaufuget Vouvray 2016Straw color with white fruit aromas enhanced by subtle notes of wildflowers. Luscious and full on the palate, forward mixed-fruit flavors of ripe peaches, green figs, even a hint of banana; there's a distinct impression of sweetness. There's some acidity behind it all, drying it out a bit as the wine crosses the palate.

Domaine Manciat-Poncet Macon Charnay Les Chênes 2016A perenial favorite from this fine producer, this wine is fermented and aged 100% in stainless steel tanks to preserve all of the zesty fruit and mineral qualities that fine Mâcon should exhibit. The chardonnay fruit for this wine comes from the Manciats' middle-aged vineyards in and around the village of Charnay. 100% hand-harvested grapes (a rarity in the region) and attention to detail at every level make this one of the purist, most satisfying white burgundies in its class. The nose is of ripe green apples with just a hint of citrus. Not muddled by oak that would overpower the delicate fruit, it shows crisp acidity and good mineral punch in the middle while finishing plump and long. A great value in chardonnay!
