Bursting with aromas of sweet red berries, rose hips, peonies, raw coca and spices, the 2019 Beaune 1er Cru Les Theurons (Domaine Gagey) is medium to full-bodied, bright and lively, its fleshy core of fruit framed by powdery tannins. This has turned out nicely.

Veins of smoke and vanilla introduce this solidly built, richly textured village-level Puligny-Montrachet matured in 30% new oak for 16 months. Brisk in Meyer lemon and pear flavors and accented by that classic limestone brininess, it’s a solid introduction to the appellation that should approach peak from 2022 through 2029 yet hold further still.

The 2019 Beaune Les Theurons 1er Cru (spelled or misspelled with an "h" instead of "Les Teurons"!) has a generous nose of morello cherries and orange blossom, a little airier than the Les Grèves. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins; not a deep or grippy Les Theurons. Lightly spiced with a pleasant bitter note that gets the saliva flowing on the finish. Not long-term but attractive.

Smoky reduction overshadows the underlying fruit at present. More interesting are the refined, intense and attractively textured medium weight flavors that deliver fine length on the very dry and slightly lean finale. My sense is that the finish will flesh out and my predicted range assumes that will occur in time.
