The 2022 Chinon Les Grézeaux possesses a reduced bouquet of peony, iris, carnal, violet and dark berries, followed by a tense, elegant and juicy palate with a calcareous texture and a long, penetrating finish despite some structured, firm tannins. However, the presence of phenols seems to obscure the purest expression of the terroir, notwithstanding the telluric force of this parcel.

The 2022 Les Grezeaux initially fails to impress with a reductive character muting the fruit. The mid-palate is smooth and polished through the Elastoplast and leather-like notes that suffuse its core before marring the conclusion. There's concentration here and good fruit quality at its heart. Still, Brettanomyces has become involved in this wine and become responsible for the most prominent aromas, creating a drying finish that has spoiled an otherwise what I know to be a better-than-good wine. What a shame. It's difficult to mark when you taste such purity and intensity underneath that's been spoiled.
