The NV (2009) Extra Brut Rose de Saignee is surprisingly tight and shut down for the year, considering so many wines are open and radiant. Over time, the wine's personality and depth begin to emerge, but I imagine the 2009 will be even better in another 6-12 months. Crushed flowers, red berries and sweet spices are layered into the vibrant, focused finish. It will be interesting to see where the 2009 goes over the next year or so. The 2009 is 100% Pinot Noir from Vertus made with a 2 day saignee on the skin, aged in steel an bottled with 3 grams of dosage. Disgorged March 2012. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2017.

A deeply hued rosé, dry and spicy, with a subtle weave of black cherry, currant, biscuit and grapefruit zest flavors, backed by firm, integrated acidity and a smoky mineral thread that lingers on the finish. Drink now through 2016. 900 cases made.

As it indicates, this is a rosé made from the natural color of the skins rather than blending in red wine. It's rich, as much a wine as a Champagne, with even a touch of tannin. Dry, with plenty of acidity to finish.
