Although located north of the village near Pommard, the Fremiet is very Volnaysian in style, on the fruit, but structured. Fine and suave, elegance characterizes it. It also benefits from a few years of aging, which bring even more radiance to its bouquet, typically dominated by red fruits. If the attack on the palate is on the fruit, the final touch is often saline or salty.

91-93 points Jasper Morris for Inside Burgundy: "Glowing mid purple. First to be picked. Much shallower soil than Les Angles but the vines have reached maturity and have coped in 2018. Darker fruit on the palate with a velvet texture enlivened by the little saline/iodine touch at the back. Very good persistence, finesse here."

The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiet unwinds in the glass with an incipiently complex bouquet mingling raspberries and blood orange with savory bass notes of woo smoke, loamy soil, espresso roast and raw cocoa. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and lively, with a deep and tight-knit core, bright acids and a long finish.

An overtly ripe yet still reasonably fresh nose combines notes of liqueur-like black berry fruit with those of exuberantly spicy plum and floral scents. The super-sleek, intense and elegant medium weight flavors exude evident minerality on the lacy and refreshing finale that is both sappy and impressively long. This is ripe yet it remains very Volnay in character. *Outstanding*

The 2018 Volnay Fremiet 1er Cru, which underwent replanting up until 1999, has an appealing bouquet of wild strawberry, raspberry preserve and crushed stone aromas, touches of rose petal emerging with aeration. The palate is framed by fine-grained tannin, quite citric on the entry and one of the most Pommard-like of d’Angerville’s Volnays. This is an energetic, edgy Volnay thanks to the limestone soil here. I suspect it will age extremely well.
